Elevators: An Awkward Moment

Today, as I was walking to class, I took the elevator with a group of people I was talking with to the sixth floor. We were having a lively conversation, discussing what we had planned for the week, Proffessor Evaluations, research projects, and whatever else we had on our minds...untill we went in the elevator.

We walked into the small cramped room and someone pushed the button labeled "6". Silently, we stood still and watched the doors close infont of us. Then nothing... we all just stood there, and waited while we zipped up to our destination without so much as a word. Everyone had their heads down, staring at the floor or the door, waiting. Waiting for those damn doors to open and release us from the elevator's death grip.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity even though it was only a few seconds, we made it to the sixth floor and stepped out. Once we were free, we resumed our conversation and headed to class.

Anyway... I want to know if any of you have experienced something similar to what I have. Also, is there a particular reason why the elevator forbids any conversation and eye contact while it carries its passengers to their chosen floor? Perhaps it's because of the cramped space and dim lighting. =/
