It has been said that Runecrafting is the scourge of Gielinor and that only a lunatic would dare risk their sanity in the pursuit of obtaining level 99. Is this true? Maybe so, but the few that do venture into the Abyss, determined to achieve their goal, emerge with vast amounts of Runes of which can be used for whatever those daring souls wish. Whether you sell them to obtain a fortune or get that level 99 Magic you have always wanted, you won’t regret investing your time in the art of Runecrafting.
This guide will recommend ways to achieve your goal of 99 Runecrafting…and how to survive it without going completely bonkers- it will consist of three parts. At the very end of the guide, you will the Quick Find Code for a skilling clan that I am part of that has many like-minded individuals who train their favorite skills, such as Runecrafting.
Post any questions that you have on Runecrafting and I'll answer it to the best of my abilities. I've been Runecrafting for a long while and so I'm very knowledgeable and can offer good advice as well.
Note:
Keep in mind that this Guide is intended to teach you how to 'Survive' Runecrafting and does not focus primarily on how to extract the highest possible amount of experience from your invested time.
Part 1 – The Cold Truth
There is something about Runecrafting that you must know before embarking on the road to 99… In the first few levels of this wondrous skill, you may have thought to yourself “Damn, this is taking forever. At least I will soon unlock the upper leveled Runes which will, without doubt, quicken things up.” You are dead wrong, if you thought this.
Throughout your Runecrafting craze- assuming you don't NoLyfe- you will *Rarely* earn 20k experience an hour (Personally, I average about 15k). I am an experienced Runecrafter and spend a large portion of my time crafting Runes and I usually earn less than 50k Xp a day. The fact of the matter is that there is no *Quick & Easy Method” to Runecrafting, there is only the method that involves many long hours spent running back and forth between a bank and an altar to earn a minuscule amount of experience. Don’t let this put you off. The fact that the experience rates are outrageously slow is contrasted with the vast sums of Runes that you will create and could potentially turn into an enormous stack of Gold or even Magic experience.
Part 2 – Live To Craft Another Day
There are three fundamentals to keeping out of the Loony Bin while Runecrafting: Variety, taking breaks, and –most importantly – avoiding the Z.M.I. Altar at all costs.
~ Variety… It’s The Spice of Life ~
It happens to ALL Runecrafters, you will get bored and begin to loath Runecrafting with a passion. To prevent this, you must swap things up. For instance, after spending a good three solid hours doing nothing but grinding Nature Runes, you will grow tired and want to give up. Don’t! Instead, you should ditch Nature Runes and head on down to Lunar Isle and begin crafting Astral Runes. Another good idea is to train the Farming skill by planting allotments every hour or so, along with trees. This change in scenery will make it seem like you just started and will allow you to continue your mad spree.
~ Take Five ~
It’s been a few hours since you started crafting Runes and you’re feeling a bit tired and you’re friend, Billy, says “Just tough it out man. Look at me, I’ve been playing for three days straight, I’m the NoLyfe King!” Should you take Billy’s advice and play non-stop? The answer is Hell No!
You shouldn’t spend every waking moment slaving away towards 99 Runecrafting, making sure not to miss out on any experience. Whenever you feel that you have had enough for the time being, take a break from the game and go do something else. Remember, Runecrafting in nature gives very little experience so you won’t be losing out on a ton of it. Besides, it’s not like you can’t get on later to catch up.

~ The Z.M.I.’s Iron Grip ~
At some point, you will catch wind of what sounds like Saradomin’s gift to Runescape called the Ourania Runecrafting Altar. You will be told that it offers the highest rate of experience and that nothing comes close to it. This is true. However, it comes at a great cost…your sanity.
The increased amounts of experience sure sounds attractive, but you will contract what is known as “ZMI Fever” and will ultimately lead to you becoming a Z.M.I. Zombie. This is caused by the seemingly never-ending tunnel that winds back and forth and the long, frustrating bank trips that are rampant with miss-clicks.
After a short time, you will become a mindless drone, systematically running from the bank with a relentless fury. You will find that, no matter how much you want to stop, you cannot pry yourself away from the altar. If you- by some miracle- stop Runecrafting, you will discover that you made zero profit and actually incurred a loss.
However, there is a small glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. If you slave it out until level 70, it is rumored that you will begin to make a slight profit. Still, it's not recommended that you sacrifice your mental health for slightly increased experience rates and and even smaller profits.
Do not, I repeat, do NOT fall victim to the Ourania Altar- it will chew you up, spit you out, rob you of your saneness, and leave you a shell of your former self.
Part 3 – A Clan of Nutcases
Perhaps the single most important thing to keep in mind when going for 99 Runecrafting (or any other skill for that matter) is to group up with other like-minded individuals. Skilling clans are perfect for providing you with other people who share similar goals of your own because you can talk amongst yourselves and share tips on how to best train your skills. Business clans is a good example because, not only are they comprised of fellow skillers, but they also give you the incentive to swap up the kinds of Runes that you craft and enjoy Runecrafting rather than doing it simply for the 99.
Below is the clan of which I am a part of and am a leader in. It’s a Runescape Corporation that has several branches that specialize in many different skills, including Runecrafting. If you’re looking for a group of people that love skilling and talking about nothing in particular, The Ultimate Corporation is the clan for you.
